College Station is located in central Texas near the Brazos Valley. The population of this city is around 86,000. The neighboring cities are Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.
The City of College Station was established in 1876 along with the Texas A&M College. This college name was derived from the old train station of the west and was very crucial for the community development. The growth of the college influenced the economy and the municipal government. The incorporation of the college was held in 1938. All the citizens of the country voted for the incorporation of the city and then the first council meeting was held in 1939 in the administration building.
Geography and climate:
This city has total area of 41.3 square miles that includes 1.03 square miles of water. This city has numerous lakes including Lake Conroe, Lake Limestone and Somerville Lake. The region is having subtropical climate and in winters, the climate is very cold. Snow in winters is extremely rare. Summers of this region are very warm and occasional rainfalls are the only reason of the variation in climate. Average rainfall is almost 39 inches and temperature is comparatively low. The main resources of this city are corn, cotton, eggs and hay. Sand, gas, gravel and oil are the main mineral resources.
Economy:
Recently in 2009, the employment rate of this country decreased by 4 percent which is the lowest among all the states. This declination is attributed to the university as it plays a vital role in the economy of the country. The problem of unemployment is on rise and also the main hurdle in the path of development of this country. Other major sources of employment are the Bryan Independent School District, Sanderson Farms and St. Joseph Regional Health Center. One of the most important sources of economy is Post Oak Mall that is the first mall of this city and also known as the biggest mall of Brazos Valley. This mall is paying the largest income tax return to this city which is very important for its economy. 80 % of the shops in this city are in this mall.
