The city of Athens is one of the rare college towns in Ohio which is a state in the country of United States of America. A college town is a city that has a huge part of its population that goes to university. It is also know as University Town. The city of Athens has the Ohio University located in it which is the major reason why it has been tagged as University Town. The city of Athens is also the seat for the Athens County. After huge hard work done by the officials of this city finally sometime back Athens was tagged as Tree City of USA due to the constant plantation of trees that the official take care of in this city.

As per the census of year 2000 the population for the city of Athens was around 21000 inhabitants that used to live in over 6000 houses. Out of these around 90 percent of the total population was Whites, around 4 percent were Blacks, just over 4 percent of Asian Decent, and other from different races which might have migrated to this city in the very early years from other parts of the planet. The per capita income for the city of Athens as per the same census was around US $11000. This reflects the favorable economical conditions of Athens.

As of today the Ohio University has become as the largest job provider in complete Athens County. Although in its early years the economy of Athens used to depend heavily on coal but today the coal market has gone down considerably and something which has come to the top is the employment which are provided by the Ohio University. The reason for the coal market to die down was that the best quality coal which was present in the city has already been extracted and used up in last couple of years. Some years back even automobile companies used to flourish in the city of Athens but today even they have lost their business. The food business is another famous business as of today in the city of Athens.

The famous Nelsonville Public Library chain which has its branches in many cities of U.S. has one branch in the city of Athens also.
