The city of Roswell is the county seat for County of Chaves and is situated in the south eastern section of New Mexico, the United State of America. River Pecos is situated in the proximity of Roswell and the famous Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is also located in its proximity. This city gained international recognition when the theory of a UFO crashing some 70 miles away from this city became famous. This happened in 1947 and although the city was quite far from the so-called crash site, it was on news on almost every channel. It was the Army Air Field of Roswell that handled the debris recovery of this UFO crash. Soon Roswell became a synonym for UFOs due to this incident.
The climate of Roswell is similar to what the rest of the United States experiences although rainfall can at times be above normal. The total rainfall is around 13.5 inches every year. The average annual temperature is around 60 degree Fahrenheit. The highest temperature can touch the heights of around 114 degree Fahrenheit, mainly in June. The lowest can go down to around -9 degree Fahrenheit, in January.
As per 2000 census, the population for Roswell was around 45,000 inhabitants living in 17,000 houses. The area of the city is around 75 kilometer square of which 0.07 percent is water. Around 70 percent of the total population in Roswell is White, 2.5 percent African American, 1.3 percent Native American, 0.7 percent Asian, and the rest from other different races, that regularly migrate to the city on job purposes. The per capita income is around $14,600.
The major highways which serve Roswell are U.S. Route 380, U.S. Route 285, and U.S. 70. The city also has its own International airport which connects it to many other major neighboring cities. American Airlines holds the major part of the flights that take off from this airport.
