Laurel is a beautiful city in Mississippi, the United States of America. The city located on the southern east region of Mississippi originates back to the year 1882. In 1883, railroads were introduced in this charming southern town, which opened the doors for timber production. Since then Laurel was converted into a milling town and a hub for such timber production activities. The city also has an American Indian settlement in the nearby Sandersville.
Laurel is connected to New York, Washington, Philadelphia and New Orleans through the Amtrak’s Crescent train also through the Laurel Municipal airport. Laurel is the birthplace and home to many famous personalities such as the opera legend, Prince and Olympic medalist Ralph Boston. Another special feature of Laurel is the Mississippi’s oldest art museum-Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.
The highlight of Laurel are the on-going festivals throughout the year which offer visitors the entertainment they are looking for. Among the many trade shows is the Martin Luther King parade and celebrations which is held in the third week of January.
The Blue Bash is another interesting event held on the lawns of Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, which can be enjoyed with the entire family. The Independence Day Fireworks Show is an enchanting fireworks display held every year at 9:15 on 3 July and it is free for the public.
Laurels most unique festival is the National Night Against Crime aimed towards awareness of rising crime and drug prevention. While in, Laurel a thing which should not be missed is the Laurel Christmas Parade the largest Christmas parade in Mississippi. It is held every year on the first Saturday of December.
You can stay in Laurel either in the privately owned residences and enjoy the warmth of the people, hotels or outdoor camping for campers who can enjoy fishing, hiking and trekking in nature’s lap. The city has also twice received the livable community award and the title of the tree city of the U.S.A in 1988.
The city also boasts of its magnificent golf courses of the Laurel Country Club, Dixie Golf Course and the Practice Tee golf club. For recreational activities laurel has the Landrum Homestead and Village which is a splendid recreation of the 18th century villages and settlement. It is also known as the “A Living History Museum”. It takes you back in history with its old architectural style of buildings in a beautiful landscape.
