History
A cultural and gaming center on the Louisiana/ Texas border, Shreveport became a city only in 1871. It was founded in1836 by the Shreve Town Company to build a town near the Red river and the Texas trail. The Red River was used until 1914 when it became unfit to be navigated but the 1990s saw a massive clean-up and Shreveport has again become a shipping centre.
However, it is more famous for its many casinos lining the Red River which is the heart and soul of Shreveport. Casinos housed in riverboats recreate the glamour and mystique of the past while providing all the requisite thrills and excitement of modern times.
ActivitiesIf gaming isn’t your cup of tea, walk across the other side of the neon-lit Texas Street Bridge and enjoy horse-racing at the Louisiana Downs. Shreveport offers the visitor an exciting mix of the larger-hearted Texan spirit and the exotic Cajun attitude. This unique blend of cultures tend to surprise the visitors who come here primarily to explore the vast musical history of jazz but are taken aback at the equally vast repertoire of blues, country and folk music also.
