Boulder Travel Guide, Colorado
30 miles northwest of downtown Denver with a population of roughly 95,000, Boulder is mostly known as a major college town and the healthy city as it banned smoking in 1995, but it has many other things for which it is appreciated like its location at the foot of the Flatirons of the Rocky Mountains, near the Rocky Mountain National Park and its pleasant climate offering endless opportunities for outdoor sports lovers. There are also many high-tech companies and research concerns that choose Boulder as their home.
Boulder came into existence in 1858 settled by the miners working in the area who gave its the name inspired by the large rocks to be found around. It has soon developed into a regional rail and trade center mainly due to the gold resources that were found in the area.
At the beginning of the 20th century mining failed to be the main economic resource and gave way to scientific and environmental research. One of the most important universities in the country was founded here in 1877 and by the 1950s Boulder become an important research centre with dozens of high-tech and aerospace companies and important institutions like the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This rapid cultural development has attracted many intellectuals and even now a great part of its residents are students attending the University of Colorado alongside those who enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle.
But Boulder’s prime attraction for both its residents and its visitors are the 30,000 acres of open space, 56 parks, and 200 miles of trails. The best way to make the most of all this space is biking and the most evident proof of its residents love for it is that there are about 100,000 bicycles in Boulder and they also use them as their prime way of transport.
Boulder is a perfect destination for families as the children will definitely not get bored with all that the city has in store for them. Outdoor attractions include children as their main visitors as they offer the best entertainment opportunities for them. One of them is the fascinating underwater fish observatory where they can see huge trout swimming behind a glass barrier and they are even allowed to feed them. A similar entertainment for children under 12 is offered by Kids' Fishing Ponds. They can continue enjoying themselves at the Fiske Planetarium where they can walk through the solar system and take part at the discovery programs, star shows, and other programs where they can look at the sky through the planetarium's telescopes.
Art lovers will have nothing to complain about as there’s plenty to see and do for them, too. The Macky Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, and the Dairy Center for the Arts are the main centers for the performing arts while the CU Art Museum hosts the works of students as well as works of international artists like Picasso, Rembrandt, Matisse and others of their stature.
There are quite a few galleries; at the UMC Art Gallery visitors can view exhibitions featuring regional and national artists as well as listen to modern and classical music while at the Andrew J. Macky Gallery local artists display their work. You can go on visiting galleries at the Dairy Center for the Arts.
A must in your visit to Boulder is the tour offered by the nation’s leading producer of herbal teas called Celestial Seasonings. It is a marvelous experience for the senses as you will be able to see, taste, and smell the products at a consumer taste test to be followed by marketing displays and the tour will end at the production plant.
At the end of the day you will be pleasantly impressed by what this cultured and well-educated community has to offer for your evening entertainment. You can choose between summer music, dance, and Shakespeare festivals.
