Kaohsiung is situated in the southern part of Taiwan on the banks of the Love River or Ai River. The population of the city is about 1.43 million. The city is well connected with the capital of Taipei and other places by rail, road, air, and ship. The city has got a temperate climate, with the average highest temperature occurring in the month of June and the lowest average temperature recorded in February. The average annual rainfall is about 1,134.1 mm.
Kaohsiung Harbor
The city faces the Taiwan Strait. The main business center and other activities take place in the area surrounding the Kaohsiung Harbor. The island of Chijin is situated on the opposite side of the Kaohsiung harbor, creating a natural breakwater. The Taiwanese naval base maintained by the Republic of China Navy functions from the Zuoying Military Harbor in the northern part of the city.
Transportation
Kaohsiung International Airport is well connected with 12 air routes to Hong Kong, Macau, Tokyo, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket Island, Kota Kinabalu, and Bali, with 14 airlines operating from the Kaohsiung Airport. Mass Rapid Transport, Speed Rail, and expressways had been built underground, facilitating faster transportation around the city. These transport systems are linked with the airport and harbor to make the city an international transport hub.
Economy
Kaohsiung had developed as an industrial town. The steel industry development is spearheaded by China Steel Corporation, the petrochemical industry is dominated by Chinese Petroleum Corporation, the ship building industry is led by CSBC Corporation, and the Kaohsiung cement industry boasts of the highest production in Taiwan. The city had established two export processing zones in NanTse and Kaohsiung. With the help of these industries, Kaohsiung had got the highest productivity in the entire country.
Fishing
Apart from heavy industries mentioned above, Kaohsiung leads Taiwan in pelagic fishing, with a major role in the international pelagic fishing industry. Fishing vessels with a tonnage of more than 620,000 operate in Kaohsiung. The estimated annual fishing catch is above 681,000 tons. This is about 54.24% of the total productivity of the country. The exports of pelagic fishing is around 230,000 tons, valued more than NT$ 8.9 billion. Thus, Kaohsiung is a highly prosperous commercial and industrial city in Taiwan. The city is planning to host 2009 World Games, a sports event that contains the sports not included in the Olympic Games.
Education
Sun Yat-Sen University, situated in the Western Bay or HsiZiWan, was started in 1980. The city is home to nearly 380,000 students, which is about 26.71% of the population of the city. Apart from the Sun Yat-Sen University, the National Kaohsiung Normal University concentrates on the training of teachers in the subjects of education, humanities, and science. Kaohsiung Medical University, running for more than 4 decades, has got over 11,000 students. The National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, the National Kaohsiung Institute of Marine Technology, and the National Kaohsiung First University of Science & Technology, are the other universities functioning in this city. The Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages conducts a 5-year foreign languages school, teaching English, German, French, Spanish, and Japanese languages. As such, Kaohsiung has got an impressive educational setup in the entire country.
