The city of Colombo happens to be one of the oldest cities in the country of Sri Lanka. That is why it holds such an important historical background. The city of Colombo has been ruled by various empires throughout its historical years and every empire created its own monument which today have become as some of the most famous tourist hot spots in the city of Colombo.

There are so many historical monuments in the city of Colombo that one day is not enough if you actually want to visit all of them. Along with various historical monuments, the city of Colombo also has a busy port and many natural tourist hot spots for those tourists who also want to enjoy the presence of nature along with the presence of various historical monuments.

Until 1977, the Bank of Ceylon was the tallest monument in the city of Colombo and was also one of the most visited buildings due to its height and design. It was after the year 1977 when this monument lost its record of being the tallest building to the two World Trade Center buildings, which have by now become an important landmark for this city.

Other important buildings, which are famous amongst various locals as well as tourists, are the Old Parliament Building and the nearby located Old Colombo Lighthouse. These two structures are famous due to their majestic size and due to the awesome historical architectural design which they posses.

Another important tourist hot spot in the city of Colombo is Galle Face Green Promenade which has become very famous in last couple of years due to the awesome atmosphere it provides to its locals. This promenade is famous due to the abundant palm trees lined along its coast, and the 1 mile long stretch of this promenade, which makes it large enough for almost everyone who visits it. This happens to be the heart of the city.
