Cheonan is a city in the South Korean province of South Chungcheong, being located approximately 83 kilometers (50 miles) south of Seoul and 46 miles from Cheongju. This city is connected to both Seoul and Daejeon by road and train, making it an easy touristic destination. Since 2005, this location has been linked to the capital through Seoul subway line one. Cheonan`s trademarks include a small walnut-flavored cake known as “hodugwaja”,which has the size and shape of a walnut. The most famous point of interest in Cheonan is the Independence Hall of Korea, which displays the events that led to Korean independence. It was built in 1987, thanks to numerous donations, in order to develop the national spirit and to remind of Korea`s colonial past. Tourists can see the Monument of the Nation, Grand hall of the Nation and Unification Bell.
Another attraction is the Gagwonsa Buddhist Temple, located on Mt. Taejosan. The temple has one of the largest bronze statues representing Buddha, weighting 60 tons and being 15 meters high. Also, a popular attraction is the Postal Museum, where you can see the complete history of the Korean Postal services. For the art lovers, there is the world famous Sculptures Park, which displays works of Armand Fernandes, Robert Indiana, Keth Haring,Isamu Noguchi, Brad Howe, C.I Kim, Wang Guangyi, Rory Macbeth. The Gwangdeoksa Temple, which has at its entrance a 400 year old walnut tree, proves that Cheonan is the home of walnuts.

The best –known festival in Cheonan is by far Heungtaryeong, which translated means pleasure and joy. The festival`s theme is dancing, and it incorporated styles from b-boy to traditional dances from Ukraine, India, Australia, China, Japan and African countries.
Also, on the 8th day of the 4th month in the Lunar Calendar, Buddhist celebrate the 1st coming of Buddha; local temples are being decorated with paper lanterns, and the city`s traffic is restricted for a parade and a traditional drumming demonstration.
