Am European microstate, San Marino is a country surrounded by the Apennine Mountains and by Italy. It represents the oldest constitutional republic in the world. Its capital is also called San Marino, being situated near the Adriatic Sea. San Marino is the third largest city in the country, but it attracts three million tourists annually. It has been named after the saint that it is said to have first lived in this area and its inhabitants put much emphasis on the religious aspect of their lives.
