Luquillo Travel Guide, Puerto Rico
In the northeast coast of the island, a short half an hour drive from San Juan Airport lays the town of Luquillo. Famous for its golden-sparkled beaches which are only minutes away from the condos, beaches shaded by a long majestic plantation of coconut palms, Luquillo is a beach town.
Endless possibilities await you in this unique sanctum. You can visit the El Yunque rain forest, you can shop at famous but private antique shops where you can find anything from Cuatro Puertorriqueño (a kind of guitar) to sculptures made from ten thousand years’ old rocks. Luquillo has everything your heart desires.
The tropical warm weather at day makes you never want to go home, and the cold windy nights make you want to breath that fresh, cool air forever. Not to mention the unbelievable taste of the seafood restaurants, which serve every kind of meals ranging from Creole to the best Puerto Rico coffee you can find.
Here are just a few of the beaches that Luquillo owns and a few of their attributes: Balneario Luquillo is a calm, peaceful crescent shaped beach, covered and shaded with coconut trees (and coconuts never fall from these trees, so you will not have to worry about one dropping on you). Playa Azul, which gives you the opportunity of the best surfing experience you may ever enjoy, is located right here, on this beach. Moderate waves and good winds make from this beach a surfers’ most desired wish.
The most visited beach is still the one which carries its “owners” name, Luquillo beach. Spotted with palms, randomly crescent-shaped with a wide opening into an amazing lagoon with calm waters and guarded by the sandy bank itself, this beach is a one-in-a-life-time experience. Those few lucky people who actually live there, know and will tell you why. It has everything from a large and dense diversity of marine life (species ranging from turtles, big puffer fish and nurse sharks to squids, tarpons, stingrays and other sea creatures), blue-translucent waters and of course the golden-red sand which is an extend of a wonderful coral reef.
Here you can also find the divers’ paradise! The Diving center is located at a nearby beach and it has everything that is ‘5 star accommodation’! Small classes, luxuriant treatment and of course, incredible and why not ‘futuristic’ equipment which will guarantee ‘fun’ at the least!
Below there are presented some amazing things to see, try, or do: The annual “Festival de Platos Tipicos” where you can take and taste a sample from everything Luquillo’s restaurants and food places have to offer. This will surely get your taste-buds delighted! The Luquillo nightlife takes place at lounges and casinos along the shoreline. Taking dinner at a 60s’ floor restaurant will guarantee you a spectacular and unforgettable view of a pink, purple red or white sunset.
The El Yunque National Rain forest is host to the rarest species of animals and plants, the weather is as unpredictable as it can get and the scenery is breathtaking.
The hypnotizing waterfalls, the sometimes scary animal sounds and the cool air breeze are just a few of the unique features you will not find anywhere else! Many more surprises await you in this unforgettable piece of heaven, on earth.
