There aren’t a lot of independent pubs and bars that you can find in Yangon. A lot of them are found inside hotels, which means they can be fairly expensive. Nevertheless, there are still few good examples of places that you can just chill out and perhaps meet a new Yangon friend.

Bars and pubs

The Music Club is considered to be the most well-known club in all of Yangon. It is highly influenced by Western-style bars, which means you can find DJs, wide dance floors, cool beers and other alcoholic drinks, and listen to American and European music. It’s located at Alan Phya Road. However, if you want to really have a good time here, make sure that you arrive early as it is open for few hours only.

If you want to find a lot of Burmese locals, head to Mr. Guitar. It features live band and music, as well as local and international repertoire. There are also karaoke booths, where you can simply wait for your turn to sing. Mr. Guitar is located at Sayasan Road.

The Pioneer is actually an old club, but it was later renovated and is now a music disco. Located at Alanpya Pagoda Road, it showcases typical Western and Burmese style of music.

Dining Places

You can also spend your nights at various Yangon cafes and restaurants. You actually have plenty of choices. However, it would be quite difficult for you to find real Burmese delicacies, as a lot of them are heavily influenced by other Asian styles of cooking.

For those who are in shoestring budget, you can enjoy great meals at a number of street stalls all over Yangon. The dishes served are normally crabs, kebabs, or grilled fish. For the middle-class tourists, a good place to go will be the Mandarin, which is located in the eastern portion of Sule Pagoda. It’s being managed by a Burmese couple. The meals served are a combination of Western and local cuisines, so you have wide variety of selection.

The Monsoon is a restaurant that is housed in a very old colonial-period building. It’s very well-known for its impressive menu, consisting of Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese dishes, besides Burmese meals. The wines here are also worth tasting.

There may not be a lot of things you can expect when it comes to nightlife in Yangon, but when you do, you know it’s going to be truly a memorable one.
