Blantyre travel guide, Malawi -: Dynamic Town of Malawi
Blantyre is the foremost industrial and commercial hub of Malawi. This capital of Blantyre district united with the city of Limbe to form a single city. The city is named after the small town of Blantyre in south Lanarkshire, which was also the birthplace of the famous explorer David Livingstone.
Location
The country’s second biggest lake, Lake Chilwa, lies east of the city. Its southern part is fenced by Lengwe National Park and Majate Wildlife Reserve. There are Carlsberg Brewery and the National Museum that showcase the rich culture and heritage of Blantyre.
Dynamic Town
The city houses the Supreme Court, Malawi Stock Exchange (opened only in 1996) and the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), the broadcaster of the state. This dynamic town also holds some big trade fairs that give an opportunity to the industry, mainly information technology and agriculture.
Demographics
The population and its growth rate are not as high as its neighbouring cities. Statistics have shown that from one census to another, the population grows roughly by around one hundred thousand. While more than 87% of the population resides in the city, others prefer the outskirts. From the period of 1977 to 1987, the population grew from 223,557 to 332,575. The population is made up of Europeans and Africans.
Education
The city is amongst the highest when literacy is taken into account, touching a magnificent 98%. A fraction of the credit goes to the city for housing some the finest colleges, which include The Malawi Polytechnic, The University of Malawi and its affiliated colleges, The College of Medicine and The Kamuzu College of Nursing.
Transport and Accommodation
Roaming both in and outside the city is made comfortable by buses and cabs, that take passengers from one corner to the other. Passenger trains also run from the city and connect other major cities. But there is also Chileka International Airport to serve as the hub for the major airlines.
Staying in the city is not only a matter of joy, but an experience. It flaunts some of the finest starred hotels in the country. The Golden Regency and The Galaxy are just a few. Some of them also have spas. There are resorts and bungalows with beautiful views.
