Skopje Sights – General Presentation

Skopje is the capital of the country of Macedonia, being its political, cultural, economic and academic center. The city is crossed by the river Vardar and is situated on the Balkan route than goes from Belgrade to Athens. That is why the Macedonian people consider Skopje as the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, being a crossroad of the world, connecting the traditional with the modern.

Skopje Fortress- Kale is said to have been in that place since the 6th century AD, its walls having been built with rocks from the antique town of Skupi, destroyed by the earthquake.

Another proof of the remarkable history of this amazing town that will allure you is represented by the symbol of the city: the Stone Bridge. It connects the two banks of the river that crosses Skopje, River Vardar, connecting thus the old city with the new and modern part. Skopje Aqueduct is also of high interest for the numerous tourists interested in this unique Macedonian city. The old aqueduct represented a means by which the town was supplied with water from Mount Skopska. Archaeologists have stated that it used to have 2000 arches, out of which only 50 were preserved with the passage of time.
