Schifflange History, Luxembourg

Schifflange is a charming city located between the valley of the Alzette and dense hills that are rich in iron ore. The municipality of Schifflange was formed in the year 1876. Before this the area was property of Esch-sur-Alzette.  

It was during the Second World War that Schifflange played a central role in the German general strike. During this strike, its organizers and several other civilians lost their lives.   

The World War II saw an enthusiastic participation of Schifflange. Schifflange had an important role to play in the medical support in the Battle of Bulge in the year 1944. The city acted as the main grounds of support and facilities to the British soldiers of 51st Armored Infantry Battalion during the war period. The city was targeted by the Germans in 1942 during the World War II. Museum of Resistance commemorates the German occupation, the general strike in 1942 and the Luxembourgish resistance.     

Since Schifflange has rich iron ores, it attracted many iron making companies. Amongst the prominent ones are the ARBED steelworks and Arcelor-Mittal. The ARBED steelworks was founded on 21st August, 1957. Schifflange has the capacity to produce about one million metric tons of long products each year.   

Schifflange has had a special presence in the field of sports ever since its formation. This is proven by the fact that the city has been chosen as a venue for next year’s big sports interregional 3rd age meet. The event promotes sports amongst the elderly people. Some of the most prominent sport personalities like Norbert Haupert, Astrid Lulling, Gilles Muller and Jean Spautz are from Schifflange.   

The construction of the A 13 Motorway Bridge in 1994 was a major landmark in the history of this town. This arch bridge - suspended deck, was the vision of the designer René Greisch.
