Riga Nightlife, Latvia
Along with Tallinn and Vilnius, Riga is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Baltic regions. The old city centre was declared a World Heritage Site, due to its large number of beautiful Jugendstill buildings. There are numberless attractions to be seen in the city: museums, gardens, old buildings; however, night owls will enjoy a holiday in Riga, thanks to the wealth of cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. This Riga Nightlife Guide will point out the best places to eat, drink or have fun in this vibrant city.
Riga Nightlife Guide - Eating Out
Smilsu Pulkstenis is the best choice for those who want to try some delicious traditional Latvian cuisine. For a Medieval atmosphere go to Rozengrāls, an authentic looking restaurant located in a cellar in the old town, where you can find medieval dishes such as baked pigeon or smoked deer ham. Stork’s Nest Pub is another great place for both Latvian and international cuisine. The restaurant is very cozy and smoking is not allowed, which might be a blessing for non-smokers, but smokers will probably prefer to go someplace else. Le Crabe is a small but elegant restaurant that serves delicious seafood dishes, but also some vegetarian meals. In the restaurant’s cellar, there is a lounge where guest can smoke cigars and drink cognac. Osiris restaurant serves affordable food and it exhibits purchasable artwork by local artists. This Riga Nightlife Guide recommends that you try the excellent pancakes at Osiris restaurant.
Riga Nightlife Guide - Cafes and Pubs
Cadets de Gascogne is a nice French café whose owner bakes some of the best pastries in the city. The café also serves delicious sandwiches, good coffee, and it has a selection of newspapers and magazines in English, French and Latvian. Emihla Gustava Shokolahde is a café that is famous for its chocolate-based specialties. The kitchen is separated by the main room of the café only by a glass window, and guests can watch how the truffles are made while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate. Lotoss café has a great view overlooking St. Peter’s Cathedral, with a friendly atmosphere and a menu composed of breakfast dishes, sweets, deserts and coffee specialties. For a cup of delicious tea, go to Apsara Tea House where you can find a great variety of Russian and Turkish teas, as well as more commercial flavored teas, and you can also smoke a water-pipe.
Riga Nightlife Guide - Nightclubs
Riga is said to be the city that never sleeps, due to its large number of nightclubs and bars. Clubs generally open after 10 o’clock, and women can go in for free until midnight. Many of the most popular nightclubs can be found in the old city, and cafes in the Dome Square often stay open until early in the morning. Club Essential, Voodoo and the Depo are some of the largest and liveliest nightclubs in the city, but there are many smaller clubs with different styles of music in the city.
