Formerly known as Meshed, the city of Mashhad is the most important city for Shia Muslims. This can always be considered to be the holiest of all the cities for the Shia Muslims. An estimate says that’s around 20 million devotees visit this city of Mashhad every year as it is a holy city for Shia Muslims. Mashhad is located around 850 kilometers from the capital of Iran and one should note that Mashhad is 2nd largest city for Iran in terms of population. The population of Mashhad was around 2500000 inhabitants as per the census of year 2006.
The climate of Mashhad is worth enjoying due to its location. There are many mountains which are located around the city and this brings in cool winds into the city. Very cold winters are general in the city of Mashhad. Summers aren’t that hot and are also enjoyed by the people of Iran. The surroundings of Mashhad are very beautiful and all these ingredients mix up to form a city in which any individual would love to live his / her life.
The Shrine of Eight Imam (Ali ibn Musa al-Rida) is the reason why so many devotees regularly visit this city. As of today the holy shrine and the attached museum is the most important asset for the government and people of Iran. This asset has acted as a magnet for travelers who regularly visit the city to page home to Imam Reza and his shrine.
The city of Mashhad is also very serious when it comes to religious studies. Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is also the part of this city. The 17th century Ayatollah Al - Khoei’s Madarsa is another very important center for religious learning. It was re-built recently with all the modern day amenities. Another important institute to watch is Razavi University of Islamic Sciences which was built somewhere in 1984.
Almost every kind of transport system is available in the city of Mashhad. The Mashhad International Airport is a very busy airport which regularly attracts huge travelers as it is the most convenient option for many travelers. Finishing touches to the Metro Rail System of Mashhad is going on and plans are to launch this metro rail real quick for the general public of Mashhad.
