Raurkela Travel Guide, India
Rourkela, which was earlier spelled as Raurkela, is located on the rich mineral belt of India and is part of the State of Orissa, India. Rourkela holds the third highest population when compared to other cities of Orissa. Rourkela became famous on the national level when Steel authority of India built one of its largest Steel Manufacturing Plants and another reason being when the Government of India decided to start a branch of National Institute of Technology in the city.
The meaning of this city’s name is ‘Our Village’. When split into two then the word Rour will mean ‘your’ in English and the other part Kela will mean village in English.
The city of Rourkela is spread over an area of around 200 kilometer square and it is famous for the red soil which is part of its mineral belt on which the city is situated. This belt also contains high percentage of iron ore and same is the reason why Steel Authority of India decided to launch one of its largest Steel manufacturing plants in the city.
Two rivers namely Sankha and Koel meet near the city and finally emerge as the River Brahmani. The city is located on hilly region and hence the hilly surroundings plus the meeting point of two rivers gives the city a nice scenic beauty which is enough to attract many tourists.
One of the most talked about landmarks of the city is the Ring Road of Rourkela which is 23 kilometers in length. This road runs around the city and connects over 18 sectors plus some important areas of Rourkela thus making it a very busy road.
The city of Rourkela was divided into two major sections namely the Civil Township and the Steel Township. This was done after the plan to launch Steel Plant in Rourkela was finally approved by the government. The Steel Township is a highly organized area which has been built after completing huge research. There are numerous schools, clinics, parks, and markets. All these hot spots are of best quality thus giving the Steel Township a very attractive look.
On the other hand, Civil Township is the original Rourkela where people have lived for years. It is like any other city with families living and earning money from small businesses.
