Madras is the old name for Chennai of today. Madras was considered to be a Portuguese name and hence after huge pressure from politicians Madras was given the name of Chennai in the year 1996. This was the time when changing names of various Indian cities was at its peak. Madras happens to be the capital of Tamil Nadu (a state of India) and it has the fourth highest metropolitan population in India. Madras has been an important tourist destination for various tourists and an important reason of growing economy of Madras has been their excelling tourism department.
There are many tourist spots in Madras and you will need to arrange for many days if you plan to visit all of them. Connemara Library is located on Pantheon Road and is famous for its design and architecture. A must see for those who love to enjoy the unique design of various monuments. Breezy Beach which can be found in the proximity of Valmiki Nagar is not that famous beach and hence does not experiences a huge crowd. Thus it has become an important tourist destination for those tourists who look for quiet places to have some time out of their daily hectic schedules.
Elliots Beach is the more famous beach of Madras with lots of crowd pouring in on daily basis. It is located in Besant Nagar and hence it is also called as Besant Nagar Beach in many occasions. It is a great place for those who plan to cool their heads off from the hoopla of the metropolitan city.
Fort St. George, which was built somewhere in 1653 by CAIO (English Company of Eastern Indies) happens to be the current parliament of Tamil Nadu. The fort also has a museum which will give you the left over remembrances of the time when English Company of Eastern Indies had the control of this port. India’s oldest church namely Anglican is also the part of this Port itself. Fort St. George attract many tourists for its unique design and becomes a must watch for those visiting Madras. Ennore Port is another historical monuments in Madras which attracts many tourists and is a must visit for you if you visit Madras.
St. Thomas Mount happens to be another happening tourist spot. This is the hill where St. Thomas took his last breath and hence it is very famous amongst the tourists especially Christians.
