Ludhiana Travel Guide, India
Ludhiana happens to be the largest city in the state of Punjab, India. Ludhiana has the estimated population of around one and a half million but statistics prove that the population of Ludhiana increases by a huge number when the harvesting season arrive in the city. This happens as many people migrate to the city from other parts of the country like Delhi, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Ludhiana is situated on the banks of River Sutlej and is spread over an area of around 310 kilometer square.
Ludhiana is an important city for India and its importance comes out from the fact that NH - 1 (National Highway number 1) passes through Ludhiana. This highway connects Amritsar to Delhi. Ludhiana is also directly connected to the capital of India by rail service.
Ludhiana is made up of two cities namely the old Ludhiana city and the new Ludhiana city. The New City consists of civil lines area which was actually Colonial British encampment and their quarters. British Cantonment was emptied during the year of 1845. The Old Fort (which now has the Textile Engineering Institute) is located in the banks of River Sutlej. Traditional stories say that there is a tunnel which connects Fort of Phillaur to this Fort but that tunnel wasn’t ever found out by researchers.
Sikhism is the major religion of Ludhiana (like the rest of Punjab) and Ludhiana has higher literacy rate (around 70 percent) than that of India (which is around 60 percent). Although Sikhism is the mostly talked about religion still Muslims and Hindus are regularly found in various parts of the city. There was a huge population of Muslims before the partition of India but due to heavy riots during the partition most of the Muslims left the city thus a huge decrease in Muslim population was experienced.
Ludhiana is the industrial hub of the state of Punjab and that is why it is also known as Manchester of India. There are thousands of small and big factories in the city which have become the backbone of the economy of Ludhiana. Only the export business of Ludhiana is around $40 million which is a major achievement.
