Kochi was known by the name of Cochin in its early years. Cochin is one of the few sea ports of India and it is located in the state of Kerala, India. Kochi has been an important tourist spot for various tourists due to the number of historical monuments and due to its contribution in the history of India.
There are many palaces in the city of Kochi and one of the most famous of all these palaces is Bolghatty Palace. This sprawling palace was built by the Dutch Regime during the year of 1744 and later on the British Army took control of the palace once they defeated the Dutch Army. Unfortunately this great palace of its time is now being used as a hotel for tourists. This hotel runs under the Tourism Development Authority of Kerala.
Another famous palace, which regularly attracts tourist to Kochi, is the Hill Palace. This was built during the year of 1865 and it is the official residence of the royal family of Kochi. Hill Palace is famous by the name of Kunnummel Kottaram (in Malayalam language) amongst the locals. The huge palace spreads over an area of around 60 acres and it houses over 49 royal buildings within the boundaries of the palace. This beautiful palace if located on a hill top and thus the view it provides to those who get the chance to visit it is just above anyone’s imaginations.
The Hill Palace also houses an Archaeological Museum, a Deer Park, a Heritage Museum, a Children’s Park, and a Pre - historic Park. All in all the Hill palace is the complete package for any tourist who loves to enjoy historical monuments and wants to learn more and more about how they were actually constructed.
Cheraman Juma Masjid is one of the most talked about mosques of Kochi. The uniqueness of this Mosque is that it actually looks like a Hindu Temples. This great mosque was built somewhere in the year of 629 A.D. Cheraman Juma Masjid happens to be the first Indian Mosque and the second on this planet where Juma Prayers (Friday Prayers for the Muslims) were officially started.
As can be seen above, Kochi is rich in terms of Indian culture and people who visit Kerala must visit Kochi to enjoy the beautiful collection of Monuments in and around the city.
