Asansol has the second largest population when compared to various cities within the state of West Bengal. Asansol is famous for its coal mining industry and it has around 1 million inhabitants as per the 2001 consensus. The coal mining industry has given Asansol the required recognition on a national level and today Asansol in an important player when it comes to the economical growth of West Bengal and of India too.
There aren’t many tourist spots in the city of Asansol but this doesn’t mean that the city is deprived of even one single hot spot for tourists. Nehru Park, which is located on the sides of River Damodar in the Burnpur area, is the place to visit for those who love lush green environments. A river bank, green environment, and a park to enjoy with family or friends are the perfect ingredients to make this place a must visit for anyone who enters the borders of Asansol.
Maithon Dam is located around 20 kilometers from the city of Asansol. Dams have always been a tourist hot spot in whichever city they were built and Asansol is no different. People can approach the dam via Asansol Bypass or Neamatpur. One can also approach the dam via Chirkunda which happens to be little longer path than the other two. This dam is one of the most famous tourists spots in the city of Asansol and is most visited during the times when the water gates of this dam are opened. This is when the scenic beauty of water gushing through huge gates gives the dam an awesome look.
Another dam, which is located again on the same path of Chirkunda, is the Panchet Dam which is also located around 20 kilometer from the city of Asansol. Therefore, the advantage is that if one goes follows path of Chirkunda then he gets the chance to visit two dams! Thus making it double treat for the tourists.
Churulia is a village which is located around 17 kilometers from the city of Asansol. This village is also the birth place of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the famous poet of India. This village contains a museum plus a memorial and both these reflect well the works of this famous poet.
