Ahmedabad is a city of many historical buildings that stand as evidence for the various historical events witnessed by the city. The national heritage site, Sabarmathi Ashram started by the great Mahatma Gandhi is place of utmost importance in the city. Ahmedabad was the center for non-violence movement in India that paved way for Indian independence. You can take some time to relax at the Ashram where the man of peace, the great Mahatma Gandhi lived in the past. There is a museum inside the Ashram that lets you know the great man who brought independence to India
Another popular sight is the Sidi Sayed mosque. It was built by Sidi Sayyeed who was one of the slaves of Sultan Ahmed Khan. It is a beautiful piece of Muslim architecture and is very famous for its screens. Jhali screen is exceptionally popular because ten semi circular windows are carved out of a single rock. The British were so impressed by the designs that they removed the central Jhali and took it to the British museum for display.
Then there is Bhadra fort famous for the Bhadrakali temple that was constructed way back in the 14th century. About 35 kilometers from Ahmedabad is the Akshar Dhaam temple built by the Swami Narayan sect. It is a ten storey temple and no less than an architectural marvel. The temple is extremely beautiful and a must see sight when in Ahmedabad. The Swami Narayan sect is taught within the temple through beautiful paintings and small acts. It is a pleasure to take a walk in the temple amidst the beautiful architecture and great crafts.
You should also have a look at the circular lake called the Kankaria Lake that was built in the 14th century by the Mughal ruler Qutub-ud-Din. Witnessing the sunset on the banks of the lake is an experience of the lifetime. If you love birds, this is the place for you. Adjacent to the place there is another artificial though very beautiful lake. If you are an animal lover, take a trip to the zoo which is one of the best zoos in India and you can find many unique species from India and few other parts of the world. For those who want to have fun amidst water, there are a few water parks and for the ones who have a taste for science, there is a science city in Ahmedabad.
