Gyor Sights – Historical Sites
The historical riches of Gyor can be seen in museums, galleries and other architectural attractions located around town. These sites will surely give visitors information about the city.
Janos Xanthus Museum. This is one of the most visited places in Gyor. The building itself is a piece of history. The façade is of Baroque-style while the window is Rococo. The museum has a comprehensive exhibit of Gyor’s history together with the history of the surrounding districts. Collections of the Petz Family and Abad-Hauser Family are also exhibited in the museum that includes applied and fine arts. It also houses Hungarian postage stamps, collection of coins and pictures.
Hungarian Old People’s Home. This is a piece of history made in the 1600’s for the citizens of Hungary. The façade is an arched courtyard depicting Renaissance style which is evident in the Tuscan Pillars. The backyard has a fascinating fountain made by Miklos Borsos.
Muzeum Herend. This museum houses a wide array of porcelain objects from different ages. The rooms have different themes patterned on the various styles of different artists. Guests will be amazed with the extremely large creations displayed in the museum.
Zichy Palace. This architectural sight houses the Puppet Exhibition given to the city by Monikaa Wiedra Berzsenyi. The exhibit includes 72 puppets with costumes from different periods. It is also completed with furniture and accessories. Visitors, young and old, will definitely enjoy looking at the displays.
Gyor Sights – Religious Sites
Visiting Gyor Sights will never be complete without going to the religious sites in the city. These attractions represent the Christian heritage of Gyor.
Bishops Castle and Episcopal Palace. This is one of the oldest religious buildings in Gyor. The site had been renovated several times already but it still has some original parts from the 14th century. It houses a permanent exhibition about the life and martyrdom of Bishop Vilmos Apor. Tours are done every hour when spectators are shown various works of the Bishop by means of lights and sounds, and audio-visual presentations.
Basilica of Gyor. The basilica is one of the most popular religious sites in the city. Its base was placed in the 10th century. The interior of the church is of Baroque style and has fresco decorations. The façade is neo-classical while the roof has neo-Romanesque details.
Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant is found in the Gutenberg Square. This is the one of the most – if not the most – magnificent relics of the city. It was made during the Baroque Era as a reconciliation gift of King Charles III to the bishop.
