Georgetown Travel Guide – “The Garden City of the Caribbean”
This Georgetown travel guide will introduce you to the atmosphere and culture of the capital and most populous city of Guyana. Georgetown is located on the Atlantic coast, on the mouth of the river Demerara and it has an estimated population of 240.000, serving as the country’s administrative and financial centre. The executive departments of the government are all located in Georgetown, as well as the Parliament building and the Court of Appeals. Georgetown is in fact the only city proper in Guyana, and it also serves as home to the head of state. It is in fact one of the most prosperous cities of the Caribbean and plans for its development have only started.

Georgetown Travel Guide – Business and Transportation
All the country’s major businesses are located in Georgetown and it is also home to the CARICOM headquarters (the Administrative Arm of the Caribbean regional Integration Organization). Guyana’s international airport lies one hour away from Georgetown, but the city’s own airport, the Ogle, has also been expanded to include intra-CARICOM flights. From here you can easily travel to Port-of-spain and Cayenne. There are also many highway projects on the run and the city plans expansion and development through several major projects that are presently being handled: a stadium (Providence Stadium), the expansion of the East Bank Highway, two shopping malls (Georgetown Centre Shopping Mall and Providence Mall), a conference centre, as well as reconstruction of all roads and construction of private houses together with the renovation of old churches and mosques. Consequently, Georgetown is in a thriving period and exports such as sugar, gold and diamonds only help increase the city’s economical level.
Georgetown Travel Guide – City Atmosphere and Important Landmarks
As any Georgetown travel guide will mention, this city is also Guyana’s main port, handling both heavy cargo and ferries. Inside the city there are also many taxis and buses that serve the whole area. The general feel when inside the city is that of a green space with many tree-lined avenues and colonial wooden buildings and markets. Most of the important buildings in the city are centered in the west, where you can take a relaxing walk and stumble upon the Promenade Gardens and the Independence Square, the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology or the National Library. The same area includes the National Museum of Guyana and St. George’s Anglican Cathedral. The Parliament Building and the City Hall (built in typical neo-Gothic style) are to be found further to the south and, if you head up north, your children will be delighted to visit the Splashmins Fun Park and see the famous landmark represented by Georgetown Lighthouse.
