Heidelberg Sights and Landmarks Guide, Germany
Heidelberg Sights Guide
Heidelberg with its varied architecture and colorful cultural life blends harmoniously the traditional with the modern offering visitors a fascinating and unique place to visit and experience. Though Heidelberg is among the economically important cities, like Frankfurt, Bonn and Stuttgart, having a strong relationship with the Association of American-German Business Clubs, it is also one of the most beautiful German towns. In this Heidelberg Sights Guide I will present only a few of many amazing attractions the town can offer and present a place which is worth visiting!
Heidelberg Sights - The Castle
Heidelberg is most known for its world-famous castle and Germany’s oldest university which was built during the 18th century. The wonderful castle with its romantic ruin-views has been an attraction for centuries. With beautiful gardens inside, originally designed by a French engineer, Salomon de Caus and a Pharmacy museum as well as the world’s largest wine barrel to see, the castle provides an experience which takes you back in time. The entrance to the gardens is free and as a special tip I would recommend you to visit the castle at night too, because the view from there as everything is lit up is romantic and beautiful. For a more detailed history and view go on the guided tour offered every hour both in German and English between the opening hours of 08:00 and 17:00.
Heidelberg Sights - The Old Town
Called Altstadt by Germans, the historical area of Heidelberg is an interesting sight to visit, where you can walk down the main street which was used by trams about thirty years before, buy souvenirs for your family and friends or have a bite or a coffee in Markplatz which is also the place of the Gothic Church, Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Ghost church). If you would like to have your residence during your visit here in the Old Town than you should book a room in the Haus zum Ritter (Knight's house) hotel which is built in Renaissance style and is considered the oldest house of the town built in 1592. The Old University can also be found in the Old Town area.
Heidelberg Sights - The University
The Heidelberg ‘Old’ University is a major attraction to visitors, being surrounded with interesting cafes and shops and having a museum. This University is famous for having strong, educational connections with other Universities of Germany, most notably the University of Mannheim. One of its most interesting additions is the Student’s Prison which is the place where students were imprisoned for minor transgression such as disturbing the peace, excessive drinking, insulting official authorities and so on. A free Botanical Garden can also be visited, originally established in 1593 and containing nowadays unique plant collections and working as a scientific and educational center.
Heidelberg Sights - The Old Bridge
A significant and beautiful sight to visit is the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) which was erected by Prince Elector Karl Theodor between 1786 and 1788, being the first stone bridge in the country. On the town side you can see a well-preserved medieval bridge gate which was originally part of the town wall. It has an amazing architecture worth seeing.
I am sure I picked your interest with all the interesting tourist attractions that were described in this Heidelberg Sights Guide and I hope the city will be on your next travel list as 'one of the greatest places to visit'!
