Vantaa, Finland - Overview

Vantaa is one of the more populous cities in Finland and for that reason, it also has a lot of tourist destinations that people may want to visit when they go to the country.  Depending on who you talk to, Vantaa is either a suburb of Helsinki or its own city but there are facts and figures both for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area that includes Vantaa and the city of Vantaa proper. 

 Vantaa's population is about 190,058 and that places it fourth on the list of cities in Finland by population.

One of the advantages that Vantaa has is the fact that the airport that services the Helsinki area is actually located in Vantaa.  It is called the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport and it is one of the transportation hubs in the entire country.  There are flights coming into Vantaa from all over the world and for that reason, there are many people that go through Vantaa on their way to other parts of Europe.  European travelers are more common than world travelers are, but you will see all kinds when you are at the airport. 

 Alternative transportation means to the city of Vantaa include railway lines, busses and cars if you feel like driving the distance yourself.  All three of these are also options within the city of Vantaa as ways of getting around although there are plenty of people that walk as well.

One of the most interesting aspects of the city of Vantaa is how diverse it is.  For example, if you take a look at the municipal council of Vantaa what you will see is that there are eight different parties represented on the council with ideologies from all parts of the political spectrum.  Likewise if you take a look at all of the sister cities that Vantaa has in the world, you will see cities from Nordic countries, western countries, eastern countries and even southern countries such as Israel.  There can be no doubt about it that Vantaa is a very interesting place.

One of the main reasons that Vantaa is as popular as it is in terms of tourism is the fact that it is right next to Helsinki.  This makes it an easy place to visit as a detour and it also makes it a place that is close to all of the action.  There are many people that commute back and forth between Vantaa and Helsinki on a regular basis and therefore if you want to understand the life of the average metropolitan Finn, a trip to Vantaa is definitely in the cards.
