Dembidollo, Ethiopia: Overview
Location: Dembidollo is a beautiful market town situated on the south western part of Ethiopia. Dembidollo is located in the famous Mirab Welega zone in the Oromia Region. This market town is at an altitude of about 1701 to 1827 m above the sea level. Dembidollo was formerly known as Sayo and a semi-autonomous kingdom had ruled the town till the end of the 19th century. In the 1920s, the Ethiopian government includes the town as a part of the Ethiopian territory and the town is now run by a governor.
Population: In 1994, the total population of Dembidollo was estimated to be about 19,587 as per the national census. According to the figures of the demographical survey of 2005 by Central Statistical Agency, the town is inhabited by around 35,065 people. Out of this total population of 35,065 inhabitants, around 18,129 were recorded as males and the remaining 16,936 were females. The majority of the inhabitants were the Ethiopian while some other minority groups included Muslims and Nigerians.
Economy: Dembidollo has a stable and reliable economy and the town is widely known for various goldsmith works and for the production of tej. Dembidollo is also a major producer of coffee and more than 500,000 kilos of coffee beans and many other products like wax and animal skins are exported annually. Moreover, many new mining factories and industries are being introduced in the town making it an important commercial center in Ethiopia.
Transportation: Dembidollo is connected to many cities by well maintained highways and inter district roads. The public transportation system inside the town is also very effective. Government operated buses, mini buses and trolley buses offer effective transportation service inside the city. There are also many private transportation services operating well and they offer taxis for its visitors.
Weather: Dembidollo has a tropical climate and the city remains mostly hot and humid throughout the year. The winter season lasts from December to February and the average temperature during the winter months is around 25 degrees Celsius. Normally the summer months of Dembidollo are very hot and the average temperature is around 38 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature may rise up to 45 degrees Celsius on a hot summer day.
Culture and society: Dembidollo has a rich culture and the people are very religious. They believe in God and they practice religious ceremonies and celebrate many yearly festivals. Moreover, the people are very hospitable and they strictly follow the code of their society.
