Sosua Travel Guide, Dominican Republic
Sosua, located at 24km (15 miles) east of Puerto Plata, has one of the nicest beaches in the country. Sosua beach is an 8km (1/2 mile) wide strip of land surrounded by turquoise waters and coral cliffs.
Sosua beach divides the town in two parts, Los Charamicos, and El Batey. The last part is the most popular among tourists and has the most amenities. There is a great difference between these two: from modern buildings to shacks with vegetable stands and chickens running in the streets. Because of its prices, Sosua began to rival Puerto Plata.
You can arrive in this tropical town by taking taxis, charter buses and publicos from Puerto Plata and Playa Dorada on the highway. After about 30 minutes you will get to Sosua beach.
Sosua was first founded by Jewish refugees who wanted to escape the Second World. A great number of foreigners who landed here for a vacation decided to stay for good.
Sosua’s prime spots are the beach, the restaurants and shops. Sosua Beach with fine white sands is in a sheltered cove. The water being warm, calm and clear swimming is a delight.
Snorkeling to the reefs is easy especially if you take a tour, which makes your snorkeling without worries as your things will be looked after and you won’t be afraid that someone might come and steal your things. Those who snorkel can swim from shore to the reef and they’ll be able to feed the fish and take memorable pictures. You won’t have to worry about boats and currents as boaters generally know about divers.
The western and eastern parts of the region are better for scuba diving as besides the reef you will find shipwrecks and whale watching opportunities.
You can even go fishing on your own or as part of an organized fishing trip
Gipsy Ranch situated on the road between Sosua and Cabarete, is the perfect place where you can ride. After renting a horse from 1 to 4 hours you will start your expedition at the stone corral located at 7km (4 1/2 miles) from Sosúa and 5km (3 miles) from Cabarete.
Other tours that you can take are the safari, the catamaran, canyoning and the shopping tour. The sight of the vendors established right on the beach does not spoil the beauty of the place.
