The Beauty of Achna, Cyprus

Achna is a village located in Famagusta District. It was exclusively a Greek village before the Turkish invaded the village. The village depended on iron rich soil which was cultivated to produce red potatoes. Now, it is deserted except for some few UN due to its proximity to the buffer zone.  The new Achna village was built close by which is near Achna Forest Dasaki within the boundaries of Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area where you can see a refugee camp.

For those who love to go out fishing, Achna is a place worth going to. You don’t have to bring an umbrella because of the warm sunny climate that they have. After a 45 minute drive from the town of Larnaka, you will find yourself on one of the most popular reservoirs in the district, which is the Achna Dam. The dam serves as a stopping place in the journey of migratory birds during autumn and spring. Birds that stop by usually include flamingos, Glossy Ibis and Pied Kingfisher.  Fishing is allowed on the Achna Dam as long as you throw back all the fish you catch. The most common fish that are caught are Mirror, Common Carp and Roach. You might have a chance of catching monster catfish as well as Largemouth Bass.

Dasaki Achnas Stadium built in 1997 is one of the famous places to visit in Achna, Cyprus. The stadium can accommodate 5,000 people. It is a multi-stadium which is currently used for football matches. This is the base for Ethnikos Achnas which is a football club based in the village of Achna. Ethnikos Achnas was given the chance to play four times in UEFA Intertoto and was eliminated in the first three matches. But they were able to make it to the Cup’s third round.

Argonaftis Animal Park is where you will get to see the park’s friendly animals. You will be able to ride a Cyprus donkey! The park serves as a shelter for at least 40 donkeys and they are also given preventive medical treatment. The animal park is located right next to Achna Dam. You will get to see the reservoir that has a magnificent view while going to Argonaftis Animal Park.
