Vukovar Sights and Landmarks Guide, Croatia

Vukovar is placed in the south eastern part of Croatia, 13 miles from Osijek and 163 miles from Zagreb and it is especially famous for the archaeological site Vucedol, which is also the name of a very old culture in the country. Besides Vucedol, a well-known touristic destination, there are many other important attractions in Vukovar for which the tourist gladly comes again and again.

Such attractive buildings, though very damaged in the war, are: the Elz Manor Castle, the baroque buildings located in the centre of the town, the Franciscan Monastery, the churches of St. James and St. Nicholas or the impressive house of Lavoslav Ruzicka

Vukovar Sights – The Museums

The Civic Museum is housed by the Eltz Palace that once belonged to the Elzt nobles. It was severely damaged during the war, but most of its areas have been restaured proudly displaying today, important collections of Croatian and European art, paintings, antique furniture, coins, arms, weapons and many others exhibits that were distributed into 4 different sections: the County Museum which presents the entire history of the city, the Bauer Collection;

The Lavoslav Ruzicka Memorial Museum that contains documents, prizes and medals that the famous winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry won during his life.

The Memorial Museum of the Yugoslav Communist party placed in the Workers’ Hall building shows the tourists all kinds of materials that present the work of the Communist party in Yugoslavia.

The Town Museum is now located in the Eltz Castle and it is still under restoration and improvement for it is going to present the national culture and how life really is in the region.

Vukovar Sights – Important Baroque Buildings

Vukovar Sights should not miss the cultural importance of some buildings situated in the centre of the town. It refers to the old baroque centre and the streets Dr. Franjo Tudman, Josip Juraj Strossmayer and Zupanijska. These are streets with distinctive buildings placed in the old and the new areas of Vukovar that are protected urban historical areas.

The buildings that were constructed in the 18th century in the new part of the town are classic in style though related to the late baroque period and they can be found on the bank of the river Vuka.

The Water Tower in Vukovar is one of the oldest in Croatia and it was built in 1913 having a well and a water-tank situated undreground. Today, this important building can be found right on the main square and in front of the Town Hall.

Vukovar Sights – Churches and Monasteries

Vukovar’s church is one of the largest in Croati. The Franciscan Monastery was a religious place where education and culture were provided by Franciscans to catholic children.

Inside the monastery there are valuable silver and gold vessels dating from the first 5 centuries, beautiful baroque paintings and one of the richest and most valuable libraries in Croatia.

Till the beginning of the 20th century and the war destruction that appeared then, the monastery and the church of St. Philip and Jacob were declared to be the oldest baroque monuments in Vukovar and now, after being reconstructed they represent an important cultural monument.

The chuch of St. Nicholas is an orthodox church built in the 18th century and there is a room in the church tower where important documents are still preserved.

Vukovar Sights also refer to other important attractions like the Town Theatre, located on the banks of the river Danube and the Srijem County Palace from the 18th century, that contains the emblem of the county and it is declared today a cultural monument.
