Lopar Travel Guide, Croatia
Lopar is one of the most sought resorts on the Croatian coast due to its sand beaches that are so rare to see in Croatia.
Lopar is located on Rab Island, 14 km away from the city of Rab.
Getting there
The only way to get there is by ferry. There are several routes you can take and during the summer, you don’t have to worry about finding one, but you have to take into consideration that some routes can get pretty crowded and even if you have a ferry every half an hour, you might not get on the first one when you get there. If you want to visit Krk Island first, you can take the ferry from Baska, which is in the south of Krk Island, to Lopar. In September the ferries start running less frequently. You can also take a ferry from Rijeca to Lopar. If you do not have a car, don’t worry busses run on the ferry connection and when you get on the island there are frequent bus connections between Lopar and Rab or the other locations.
Accomodation
Once you get to Lopar if you happen to be without a reservation at one of the hotels or villas, just head to one of the tourist agencies and ask about free rooms. They will lead you to what they have available. Do not stop at the first apartment though ask to see other rooms and then decide which one is best for you. Of course, the one close to the beach would be the best option.
The Beach
The beach is excellent for kids as it has fine sand and the water is shallow. You don’t need those plastic sandals to protect you from the rocks and the sea hedgehogs that are to be found on the majority of the Croatian beaches. The fact that the water is shallow is another advantage, as the water gets warm soon.
There is a part of the beach where you can rent chairs and umbrellas but you can also go to the place where you just lay down your towel on the sand and enjoy a wider space.
The water is clean and if you deeper into the sea you can have a good swim as well as practice some snorkeling. The fish are really friendly and they will let you watch them. They are probably used to tourists!
The tide goes out and comes in so don’t panic when you see the water disappearing from the beach.
The area
The surroundings are quite rocky and you won’t see many green spaces around but if you venture more into the island you’ll find plenty of attractions.
Evenings
During the evening the kids have a large playground full of games and the kids can play around till there’s time for bed.
There are some pastry shops around where you can buy you breakfast and for lunch you can go to a restaurant, there are plenty to choose from.
Tips
It is better to have a visa card with you and pay whenever you can with it as it is cheaper and more convenient that exchanging money all the time. You should have some Kuna with you though as there are placed that do not accept credit cards.
Lopar is definitely the place to go with kids and have a relaxed beach holiday
