Harbin, China – Overview
Harbin is a great cultural and historical city of China. It is located in the Province of Heilongjiang. It is ranked the tenth largest city in China. The city of Harbin has great political, cultural, economical and scientific importance. The word Harbin is derived from the word “Manchu”, meaning a place for drying fishing nets. Harbin has a long cold winter season and that is why it’s also known as the “Ice City”, being famous for its ice sculptures.
The city of Harbin is composed of 8 districts. These districts include Daoli District, Nangang District, Xiangfang District, Daowai District, Pingfang District, Songbei District, Hulan District and Acheng District etc.
Historical evidences show that this area has been inhabited since 2200 BC. The city of Harbin is originated from a small village. In 1904, after the Russian defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, thousands of people from many countries moved to Harbin. Hence, several industries were established here.
Approximately sixteen countries established their consulate offices in the city. Harbin witnessed the industrial growth during this time. In 1932, the Japanese troops occupied the city, which led to the migration to the United States, Russia, Germany and many other countries.
Harbin was ruled by Russia, the Russian influence and architecture can be seen all around the city. It is home to many popular buildings of historical and cultural importance. Some of the most popular historical buildings and landscapes include The Russian Orthodox church, Saint Sofia Church, Harbin Xinhua Bookstore, Dragon Tower, Zhongyang Dajie, Sun Island Scenic Resort and Ice and Snow World etc. These buildings reflect the culture, traditions and history of Harbin.
The city is also home to many popular institutes of Northeast China. Some of them include Harbin Institute of Technology, Heilongjiang University, Heilongjiang Institute of Technology, Northeast Forestry University, Harbin Medical University, Harbin Engineering University and Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine etc.
Harbin has a modern infrastructure and the city has all the major transportation options. Harbin Taiping International Airport serves for the domestic and international flights. Harbin Railway-Bureau is a historical railway station.
The city is a great tourist spot. Every year a large number of tourists from all over the world visit Harbin to explore its beauty, culture and history.
