Baotou is situated in the western inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with Mongolia to the north and the Yellow River to the south, even though part of the Yellow River, meaning 214 kilometers, crosses right through Baotou city area. The entire city surface measures 27768 square kilometers, and the map configuration shows Baotou with its mountains and hills in the middle, grassland in the north of the mountains and plains in the south of the mountains. Yin-Shan and Wu-la-er-Shan are the most important mountains that can be found here, with the altitude above sea level measuring 2000 meters.
Concerning the weather, Baotou is a favorable place for travelers, with attractive and moderate temperatures, the average temperature being 8 degrees.

The airport is 2 km south of the eastern section of the city, and its regular flights are to the major cities as Shanghai, Guanghou and Beijing. Baotou has also train connection with a number of cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Hohhot and Taiyuan.
If you just want to visit or travel to nearby sights, a bus or a minibus is the perfect choice, the cost being really low.

As far as population is concerned, based on some official statistics released at the end of 2008, Baotou numbers 2.46 million people and is composed by 31 nationalities such as Meng, Han, Hui, Man and other ethnic minorities.
The economy has developed and increased over the past fifty years, and is based mainly in heavy industry, here being produced huge quantities of steel, aluminum, iron and coal.

Baotou cuisine is famous for its strong flavor of Northwest China and has as main ingredient beef, mutton, and noodles. As local flavor, the inhabitants use lot of wine made of horse milk and oatmeal.
Around the Yellow River, restaurants prepare various carp dishes, Songshu Yu being a famous fish dish of the city.
