Valparaiso Sights and Landmarks Guide, Chile
Valparaiso comes from the Spanish word Valle Paraiso that means Paradise Valley. If you want to see the true beauty of Valparaiso, you need to spend some time here and you will definitely fall in love with the place and its people. You can get a room booked in one of the many great hotels in the city. Once the accommodation part is looked after, plan a trip of the city and enjoy.
The city has a rich history that can be seen in the large number of historical monuments present here. There is the famous La Matiz del Salvador church that was built just below the Santa Domingo hill. This church is famous for its beautiful statue ‘Cristo de la Agonia’. This statue was a gift from the Spanish Monarchs to the Metropolitan Cathedral. This carved wooden statue is taken on procession through a part of Valparaiso every Good Friday.
You can also visit the famous wharf called the Muelle Prat that is used actively for exporting and importing goods to Chile. You can also buy handicrafts and goods from the market near Muelle Prat.
Another interesting way of spending your time is a ride on the cable cars called the ‘ascensores’. You can take a trip around the city and enjoy the unique experience.
Valparaiso also has three houses of the famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. These houses are beautifully built and are worth visiting.
Plan a trip around New Year and witness their vibrant New Year celebrations. Every New Year’s Eve, a special firework show is organized called the Pyrotechnic Festival. If possible, go on top of one of the city’s hills and witness the exuberant fireworks. You can even take a trip on one of the boats around the harbor and see the lovely show from there.
There are day trips to the sister town of Vina del Mar that can be taken if you are looking for some international style ambience and culture.
