Kitchener Travel Guide, Ontario

The city of Kitchener is located in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is also the seat of Waterloo Regional Municipality and is located in the proximity of Waterloo (on its north) and Cambridge (on its south). Although the two neighboring cities Waterloo and Kitchener have different municipal administrations yet many times they are referred as K – W (which means Kitchener - Waterloo). The three neighboring cities Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge are together referred as tri – cities.

Kitchener is located in Saint Lawrence Lowlands which are part of south western section of Ontario. This location gives the city its deciduous forests and the necessary wet climate which such forests require. Kitchener happens to be the largest city in Grand River Watershed. On the western side of Kitchener you will find the famous Baden Hill which is part of Wilmot Township.

The city has a couple of glacial formations around like the kame formation which is actually the highest of all the glacial formations in that area. Another important glacial formation is Waterloo Moraine which occupies an important chunk of artesian walls and this happens to be the formation which serves the drinking water for Kitchener. The very initial name of Kitchener was Sandhills which was the best description of such high points located around the city.

As per the census of year 2006 the population of Kitchener was around 205000 inhabitants. The metropolitan area of Kitchener (which includes the neighboring cities of Cambridge and Waterloo) had the total population of around 451000 inhabitants. This huge population gave it 11th spot in terms of all metropolitan areas in Canada and 5th spot in terms of all metropolitan areas in Ontario. Around 30 percent of the total population of this city is Canadian; around 25 percent is German; around 23 percent is English; around 16 percent is Irish; around 16 percent is Scottish; around 10 percent is French; around 6 percent is Polish and rest being from other different countries.

Kitchener is one of the few blue – collar cities of Canada due to the presence of many companies. You will find organizations manufacturing auto parts, furniture components, seat manufacturers, shoe manufacturing, and meat producing etc. In last few years many of the cities of Kitchener have faced sever downfall in profits due to the ongoing market crises yet times are near when the economy of Kitchener will again start to flourish like it used to.
