Casselman is one of the best kept secrets of Ontario. Found in the western part of the province, the small town is less than an hour’s drive from Ottawa and minutes away from Alexandria which makes it very accessible to many tourists who want to visit Casselman. The town is also an hour away from the nearest US border. The current population is less than four thousand but the population is consistently increasing as the rural appeal of the town is being revealed. Although it’s only minutes away from Ottawa and US, getting there by train is still the easiest option. The train that comes to and from Casselman operates twice daily.

The town has an agricultural land. Since its establishment, it’s well been known to be a fully fertile land as almost any type of crops that could grow on the given weather conditions of the town grew without any problems. Most of the residents are working as farmers although there are relatively a few that have found employment in nearby areas.

Entertainment in Casselman is a little bit limited but will be worth your time. There is a golf course in Casselman where tourists can practice their skills slowly. Don’t be surprised though that you’ll be playing with a good number of tourists and locals especially during the weekend. There is also a farm in town that you can visit that could also be your place to stay for the night. Just be sure to get in touch with them in advance to ensure your reservation.

If you really want to see the best of the town, visit it in the 2nd week of August. The festival called L'écho d'un Peuple is held here every year. For at least three days, various art performances are held in town. It’s reputed as one of the biggest festivals in the province.

If you’re planning to visit Casselman, practice your French a little bit. Although everyone speaks English, more than 80% of the population has French as their first language. If you want to easily transact and even gain a good number of friends, show your enthusiasm by learning French a little bit.

An interesting note about Casselman that every tourist should know is that it is surrounded by another town called The Nation which is made up of three towns. When the three towns considered merging, only Casselman refused to join. The Nation was established in 1998.
