Brantford is a popular by the name of Captain Joseph Brant, one of the main historical figures for the city of Brantford and a six-nation chief. Joseph Brant was a popular figure who was known as Thanyendangena who along with his compatriots fought in the American Revolution with the English. After the completion of the war, Brant who chose to remain along the Crown requested for a land in Canada so that he and his people could stay peacefully. After much negotiations and meetings, Brant was granted land on the either side of Grand River.
This land became popular as the Brant’s Ford. It was in 1784 when Brant along with his people moved from Mohawk Valley NY came to the valley of Grand River presently known as Ontario. Being unaware Grand River’s headwater location Iroquois could not settle there and as a result, Brant sold some of the nearby area to a white man who befriended him. Brant believed that the white man and his folk could teach him agriculture and farming.
According to the history of Ontario, John Stalts was the first white man to arrive at Brant’s Ford during 1805 and until 1823, the overall white population of Brant’s Ford increased by hundred people. It was during 1826, when a unanimous decision was made to name Brant’s Ford as Brantford in the honor o Captain Joseph Brant. According to a special act of Parliament, Brantford was awarded city status on 31 May 1877.
