Festivals

Two great festivals are Semana Farroupilha, featuring traditional folk dancing and singing, and Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes that is a massive fishing boat procession.

Parks

Parque Farroupilha houses the neo-Gothic church of Santa Terezinha, and an abundance of trees, a lake, a small zoo and a variety of sports facilities.

Maurício Sirotsky Sobrinho Park (Harmonia Park) is home to a replica of a traditional gaucho farm - the Harmonia Ranch - an aero modeling track, a modeling tank and children’s’ sites. 

Museums

The Museum of Natural Sciences (Museu de Ciéncias Naturais) has around 10,000 mineralogical, zoological and archaeological exhibits - effectively, a complete survey of the natural treasures of Rio Grande do Sul.

Architecture

One of the finest buildings in Porto Alegre, the neo-Baroque Teatro São Pedro has recently been restored. Cathedral Metropolitana is a stunning display of architecture, sculpture and stained glass.  Restoration work on this Renaissance-style Cathedral began in 1772 but was frequently interrupted then finally completed in 1986!

Market Hall

On Praça 15 de Novembro is the public Market Hall (Mercado), where food, a great range of the regions’ maté teas, and craft products from the Gaúcho country are for sale.

Cruises and Tours

There are many to choose from, but try: River Tours from the tour-boat berth (Doca Turística) on Avenida Mauá. Linha Turismo - a tourist bus line. Delta Cruises - journey through many fast developing and uninhabited islands in the River Delta.

Cultural Centers and Museums

Restored in 1990, Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana is now one of the biggest cultural centers in Latin America.  Visit the Majestic Cafe on the top floor for the superb city centre view.

Visit one of the centers of Gaúcho tradition in Porto Alegre, which offer visitors typical local dishes, and performances of traditional music and dancing.
