Sucre Sights and Landmarks Guide, Bolivia

If you have had the chance to read about Bolivia’s fascinating history, then you should know that you will have a lot to see and enjoy in Sucre in Bolivia.

Sucre was an epicenter of Spanish rule during the colonization period, where numerous universities, public buildings and churches were built and have since then been exquisitely preserved. This is a young city considering the University and the amount of students that it brings to the area. Therefore, you should not be surprised if it takes you back to your college days while visiting with all of the young blood that passes through the streets.

While in Sucre, you will be able to visit the Recoleta Church which was established in 1601 by the Franciscans. Here, you will be able to experience spectacular views of the city while also dining at the cafe that they have on the Church’s grounds. You can then go to Parque Bolivar to pass some time or talk with friends. The park was named after the independence leader and uniter Simon Bolivar.

One of the coolest places to go to in Sucre is Cal Orkco. Here you will be able to see dinosaur footprints that were impressioned on to a wall of 70 degrees that used to be a lake floor. Pretty cool, right? Get ready to board the Dino Truck, as it will take you to Cal Orkco.

For more history regarding Bolivia and its independence, there is no better place to go to then to La Casa de La Libertad or House of Liberty. This is the exact building where Bolivia’s independence was announced in 1825. It is actually a convent that was built during the colonial times and has then been converted into a museum. You will also see various paintings, artifacts and other displays regarding Bolivia’s history.

Another place to go is the Museo Textil Etnografico ASUR which is a regional textile factory. You will be able to take a look around and pick up a few pieces if you would like as the sell some pieces too.

If you are looking for adventure, you can go paragliding as Bolivia is known for the experience. Others may want to take a day off from touring and take a relaxing day off at the Cine Universal which is a local movie theatre. You should also swing by the Universidad Real and Pontifice de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca since it is one of the oldest in Latin America and you may be able to make some new friends.
