Hamilton Sights and Landmarks Guide, Bermuda

Hamilton is the tourist hub of Bermuda not only because it functions as a central terminus but because Hamilton promises you loads of sightseeing, eating and fun-activities. Most of Hamilton sights are within walking distance and you can go viewing them without the help of a guide. Although rental cars are not available for sightseeing, taxis are. If you have time and money, you can rent horse-drawn carriages. The carriage-drivers usually give nice commentaries on various Hamilton sights. You can also rent a scooter.

Hamilton Sights – Historical Attractions

Fort Hamilton, the massive Victorian fortress built in the mid-19th century, is one of Hamilton’s prime historical attractions. What once was an army garrison, has now been converted into a plant nursery. Admission into the fort is free and it daily remains open for public viewing between 8 a.m. and sunset.

Then, there is Bermuda Historical Society Museum. Designed by Hamilton city’s first postmaster, William Bennett Perot, the building is an attraction in its own right. To top it, the museum collection ranges from early Bermudian coins (hog money) to ceramic items, antique silverwares, furniture and even musical instruments. Among other exhibits There are documents, books, portraits, etc.

Hamilton Sights – Natural Attractions

Hamilton has many well-maintained gardens and parks. Albuoy’s Point, Barr’s Park, Cedar Park, Par-la-ville Park and Victoria Park are to name some of the city’s most beautiful gardens and waterfront parks. While Cedar Park was inaugurated only in 2003, the other parks have been a part of the city for quite a long time.

Coral reefs close to the Hamilton harbor pull tourists in large numbers.

Hamilton Sights – Religious Attractions

There are about 12 churches in Hamilton, with the most famous being the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. Standing on Church Street, the majestic Gothic structure is made of four different types of stones - Bermuda stone, Caen stone, Nova Scotia freestone and Scottish granite. The church’s ornate carvings and its stained-glass windows add to its appeal. The harbor of the town can be compared to Norfolk in US. The Cathedral Tower gives excellent views of the entire city and the harbor.

Hamilton Sights – Other Attractions

The City Hall must be named among Hamilton’s chief attractions. Completed in 1960, the grand white edifice happens to be the seat of the city’s municipal government. It is also the cultural center of the city – both Bermuda National Gallery and Bermuda Society of Arts are housed here. Moreover, it is the venue of Bermuda Festival.

The Sessions House, Bermuda’s Assembly House, was built in 1819. Built in the Italian Renaissance-style, the structure had a clock tower added to it in 1887. Visitors are allowed in the gallery when the Assembly is in session (from November to May). Bermuda’s Supreme Court is also housed in the same building.

The other landmark building in Hamilton city is the Perot Post Office.

Your tour of the Hamilton sights remains incomplete without your paying a visit to Hamilton harbor, which offers scenic views from every angle. Close by is the Front Street, Hamilton’s duty-free shopping street, which also has the highest concentration of eateries and watering holes.

Just look out for some of the last minute Hamilton vacation deals and have a great holiday out here.
