Belmopan Travel Guide - The Garden City
Belize is a country with a rich and tormented history. Once part of the Maya Empire, then under Spanish and subsequently British occupation, it is a cultural and linguistic melting pot. The capital city of Belize, Belmopan, a perfect example of the country’s diversity, is an ethnic mix of Kriols, Maya, Garifuna and immigrants from all over the world. Located in central Belize, Belmopan is a very young city. It was built in the 70’s, after the previous capital was destroyed by a hurricane. Although Belmopan is the smallest capital in the world, and probably the newest as well, it is well worth visiting. The calm and airy atmosphere of the city is great for tourists who would like to get away for a while from the bustle of big cities, and to experience its culture. This Belmopan Travel Guide will give you a few useful tips for your holiday in this unique city.
Belmopan Travel Guide - Transport
Philip S. W. Goldson Airport is the closes international airport to Belmopan, and it has incoming and outgoing flights to and from several major destinations. The airport serves Belize City, the former capital, but it is only 1.5 hours distance from Belmopan. There are frequent flights to and from nearby Mexican cities such as Chetumal. Tropic Air, Belize’s domestic airline operates flights between Philip S. W. Goldson Airport and the country’s other minor airports. The flights are usually very short, less than half an hour, but you can enjoy some spectacular views. There are several bus companies that operate between Belmopan and Belize City, San Ignacio, Dagringo and other cities. In Belmopan, the best way to get around is on foot. Since the city center is fairly small, you can easily walk to the city’s major landmarks while enjoying the omnipresent gardens and parks.
Belmopan Travel Guide - Accommodation
One of the best places to stay in Belmopan is the Bullfrog Inn, located close to the city’s tourist attractions. Established in the 80’s, the Bullfrog is one of Belmopan’s oldest and most popular hotels. It offers great accommodation and facilities at affordable prices, and also an excellent bar and restaurant. If you want to book in advance, you can do so on the hotel’s website. Another great place to stay is the Super Palm resort, a stylish hotel with luxurious facilities and relaxing atmosphere. If you’d like something more exotic, the Belmopan Travel Guide recommends the Jaguar Paw Jungle Resort, which offers exciting activities such as cave tubing and guided jungle tours. Although the hotel is a bit pricey, it is an excellent opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Belmopan area. If you’re looking for budget accommodation, Yim Saan Hotel in the city center is the best choice. The service is reasonably good and inexpensive compared to the fancier hotels and lodges in Belmopan.
