Bridgetown History

The 19th century was quite eventful. In 1807, the British Parliament passed an Act that abolished slave trade; however, this law did not have any force in this part of the British Empire and slavery continued to be practiced giving rise to the slave rebellion of 1816. Bridgetown Sightseeing

Bridgetown is home to one of the oldest synagogues in the region. Built in 1654, this Jewish congregation was destroyed in 1831 because of harsh climatic conditions and it had to be restored. Presently, the Barbados National Trust has been entrusted with the up-keep of the synagogue. read more
