Dhaka is the huge capital city of Bangladesh, with a population of over eleven million people over an estimated land area of 1,400 square kilometers. Dhaka has been attracting tourists for some time with the many mosques, attractions and its unique form of public transportation rickshaws.
The city is located in the deltaic region of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers, and is served by the Narayanganj that is located to its south-east. It is the largest city of Bangladesh, where its surroundings and natural wonders give you more reason to stay in the city.
Weather of the city
Dhaka is a city with moderate temperatures where its monthly temperature ranges from 18 degrees to 29 degrees Celsius. It is located in the monsoon climate zone and has an annual average rainfall of 73 inches. Rains are heaviest between the months of May and September.
The city offers tourists lots to see with its interesting history and rich culture, while its mosques and temples are usually the crux of the city tours. There is a blend of old and new architectural structures for you to visit in the city.
As the city is always thriving with activity, you find a lively atmosphere here. You are sure to enjoy your trip to Dhaka with the friendly approach of the locals.
Transportation in Dhaka
Fares of taxis and buses are cheap in Dhaka as it is available in large numbers. You can find non-stop and express buses from main bus terminals in the city to the principal towns of Bangladesh. Rickshaws are available for short travel in the city.
The railway network is also widespread with connections to the major towns of Bangladesh. Though cheap, railway travel can be irritating with its being packed to sardines most of the time.
Traveling tips for Dhaka
It is better to carry lightweight clothes when in the city; warm clothes are only required in the evenings of the cool season. Though Bengali is the language people speak here, many people know some English.
Tourists should always carry the address and telephone numbers of their respective embassies. Water for brushing teeth, making ice and drinking has to be boiled or sterilized and as milk is not pasteurized, boil before consuming. This is why dairy products should be avoided in Dhaka.
Visas are required by most nationals and overstaying in Dhaka may lead to a fine. Nationals of Israel are however refused entry to Bangladesh. When entering Dhaka, make sure foreign currency you bring is entered in a currency declaration form.
