The city of Kabul is known for its rustic surroundings. The city is also known as a beautiful place and the people are known for their hospitality. But some things don’t change in the city, and the city is internationally known as a dangerous place. This is based on facts, making it the reason why most adventurous travelers are often drawn into the city.
After more than 25 years of war, the city of Kabul has suffered, the countryside is still peppered with landmines and some of the famous landmarks, minarets and monuments are reduced to rubbles. But not all are damaged and destroyed, there are still a number of historic buildings and locations in the city that the visitors can visit. One noteworthy site that one can visit is the Babur’s Gardens, and this garden is located south of Central Kabul.
This garden is the idea of the Mughal ruler Babur and this was started in the early 16th century. This was the site of the ruler’s tomb and based on historical accounts, the garden is the most beautiful spot in the city of Kabul. For first time visitors, a trip to the Babur Gardens is a must-do activity. The garden covers 11 hectares and is the largest public space in the city. Though the gardens were ruined during the war, the good looks of the garden were restored thru the efforts of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. This well-known garden was conceived as a classical charbagh which is a four-garden pattern and the garden also features a series of quartered rising terraces that are split by the central watercourse. This garden is surrounded by high walls that were rebuilt by the locals.
For those interested in history, the Bala Hissar and City Walls are the perfect sights to see. This is located south of Central Kabul and this is actually a fortress. This is the old seat of royal power in the city. The fortress sits at the foot of the Koh-e shir Darzawa Mountains. The fortress was built near the end of the 19th century and the previous fortress of the city was destroyed and damaged by the attacks of the British army. The old city walls of the fortress can be a perfect platform where Kabul visitors can get a glimpse of the city of Kabul.
