Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – How to get there?

The city of Sibiu is the capital of Sibiu County situated in north to the Southern-Carpathians, in the heart of Romania. The Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization lies 1.5 miles (2 km) near the city. The museum is approachable via train or on the E68 and E81 international routes that passes through the city.

Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – Overview

There is a wonderful landscape in the forest near the city, giving place to the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, the largest open-air museum in Romania having a total of 96 ha (237 acres). This immense territory includes two distinct exhibitions, the open-air ethnographic museum and the exhibition of modern wood sculpture, two different worlds meeting on the same place in perfect harmony. There is a 6 ha (15 acres) lake in the middle of the museum that mirrors the floating bridges and the windmills surrounding the lake.
The museum exposes traditional houses from all over the country, from Transylvania to the Danube Delta. Tools and machineries linked to the traditional crafts are also exposed, wind- and watermills, wine presses, butter churns just like some of the first threshers in Romania. My personal favorite was a wooden merry-go-round and a colored chariot especially for the transport of brides on their wedding day.

Sibiu – ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization – How much does it cost?

The museum is opened all week, except for official holydays. Tickets for adults cost 15 lei (app. 5 $), tickets for children and students cost 4 lei (app. 1.2 $) but there is extra charge for night visiting (from 19:00 to 03:00).

Sibiu History

When Transylvania became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Sibiu was chosen as the capital of the principality. When Romanians were finally granted the freedom of religion by Emperor Joseph II, Sibiu become the center of Romanian Orthodoxy. This overlapped with the efforts made by Romanian intellectuals to revive national values and fight against Hungary’s annexation of Transylvania in 1867. Therefore, Sibiu became the headquarters of the Romanian National Party and the of ‘Memorandum’ movement. In the second half of the 19th century, Sibiu experienced an unprecedented growth: new neighborhoods were being built; there was... Read more »
