Overview of Sacueni (Szekelyhid in Hungarian and Zickelhid in German)

Sacueni is a small village in Bihor near the capital of the County, Oradea (42 km). Eldest archaeological findings of the city date back to 1700 BC and it wears the name of Ox Castle („Ökörvár”); beside that one of the eldest gaelic grave from Romania was also found here. From the 9th century this land became the base of the Hungarian tribes from the zone, especially for the armed Secuis (Székely in Hungarian). The second part of the Hungarian name of the city, „híd” means „bridge” and most probable it denotes the historical fact that Seciu people had the right to charge a tax from the merchants going from North to South for passing the bridge on “Ér” river.

If you are crossing the border at Létavértes (what is by the way the sister city of Sacueni) you should take a short break at Sacueni to visit the three churches of the town (catholic, protestant and ortodox). Unfortunetally the old fortress of the city was already demolished but there is a very nice mock-up of it in the garden of Protestant church (check the gallery).

My advice is to visit the city in the night, I really enjoyed walking the empty streets and taking pictures of the buildings and churches.

Recommended Cluj-napoca Guide

Cluj-napoca Travel guide

The cheapest and easiest way to get around in Romania is by train, but although you can travel by rail from practically any corner of the country to another, train rides can be rather long, and often crowded. There are several types of trains, depending on how fast they go and how many stops they make along the way. Keep in mind that when travelling on the so called ‘personal’ trains, you might not always find a seat. If you can afford it, either take an intercity train, an “accelerat”, or get a first-class ticket. There are regular train connections to Cluj-Napoca from Bucharest, Timisoara and other major cities, and... Read more »
