The perfect vacation on Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii

So much of Hawaii's appeal is tied to aloha, affection and love, it’s surprising to find there’s no word in the Hawaiian language for romance.

Hard to believe, too, because if ever a destination inspired romance, it’s Hawaii. The islands are exotic, magical and beautiful – just like being in love!

Think Hawaii and couples think of strolling barefoot on the beach as a mosaic of brilliant colors is painted skyward at sunset. Of a dinner cruise and slow dancing under the stars. Of sharing a mai tai, enjoying a luau, and the fresh fragrance of island flowers. Most of all, the closeness, the warmth, the vision of two lovers as one.

Hawaii and romance is a timeless pairing that spans all generations and draws couples from all walks of life. It also explains why the islands consistently rank so highly when people are asked to name the world’s most romantic destinations.

Hollywood has done its part to endorse Hawaii as a setting for romance and love. In 1953, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr ignited the big screen in From Here to Eternity with their passionate kiss rolling in the warm surf of a golden Hawaii beach. Movie kissing hasn’t been the same since.

Fans of Elvis Presley are quick to remember the wedding scene from Kauai in Blue Hawaii as one of the highpoints of the King’s film career.

More recently, the hit movie 50 First Dates used the charms and relaxed ambiance of Hawaii as a backdrop for its romantic storyline. Again and again, Hollywood’s message comes through like Cupid’s arrow in spring: romance thrives in Hawaii!

As such, romance is an essential component of Hawaii's visitor industry. Romance couples – especially honeymooners – tend to upgrade their travel options and favor higher-end accommodations and services. In many cases, a romance vacation in Hawaii is the trip of a lifetime; there’s no scrimping by couples to celebrate this special moment in their lives.

Couples also enjoy coming to the islands for anniversaries, especially those who honeymooned here. Most come back to re-live the fond memories and many reaffirm their love with island-themed vow renewals.

But all of them come back for romance and the spirit of ho‘onanea, which means in Hawaiian, “to pass the time in pleasure”.

Honolulu History

Honolulu, HI, United StatesAn outcome of these two very dissimilar yet significant happenings was that Honolulu became a settled community at the very begining of the 19th century. As the 19th century advanced, a great number of American and European vessels (mostly merchant ships) started anchoring in Honolulu harbor and it became an important commercial hub of northern and central Pacific region. In 1845, another important year in Honolulu history, the thriving business community was declared the permanent capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the then ruler, Kamehameha III. Kamehameha III was the first Christian ruler of the House of Kamehameha. He and his next two... Read more »
