    Bhutan

There’s less then a month until 2011, and most intrepid travelers are most probably busy planning their Christmas or New Years trip, but there’s something else that you should start thinking about: where are you going to go next year? 2011 is ripe for travel, but the question is which destinations you are going to choose.

Planning ahead helps you keep your travel schedule organized, and it can also help you hunt up some great deals in advance. So if you still don’t know where the travel-bug will take you, here are the top travel destinations for 2011.

    Bhutan

Bhutan is a small country and often overlooked by travelers who go to Asia, but 2011 might just great for the country’s tourism. There is much to attract visitors to this small Himalayan country: the landscapes, the culture, the spirituality and the wonderful people. Bhutan seems so peaceful and harmonious that many people call it the last Shangri-La.

Bhutan is fairly poor by international standards, but although the wages are low, the people don’t live in poverty. Cultural development and the preservation of the environment are important in Bhutan, so green travelers will certainly appreciate this aspect of it.

    Croatia

Over the past few years, Croatia has become Europe’s premier rivieras, and many beach-goers from abroad prefer this destination to the more established beaches in France or Greece. Croatian beaches have clean water, lots of sun and a lively atmosphere, but the cultural heritage is not lacking either.

Historical towns teeming with heritage sites, monuments and museums are all over the country. Adventure travelers will also enjoy their stay in Croatia, especially the unspoiled lakes and mountains.

    Syria

    Crac des Chevaliers, Syria

Syria is one of the most diverse and fascinating countries in the Middle East, whose cuisine and history have convinced many people to visit it. Syria will offer you some spectacular desert landscapes, a wealth of amazing archaeological sires, busy cities with colorful souqs where you can haggle for every imaginable product in the country, and great food. In addition to this, Syria is quite safe (a great plus for solo travelers).

    Zambia

    Victoria Falls

If you are an animal lover and you prefer your holidays in the nature, not the asphalt jungle, Zambia is the place to go. Out of all African countries, Zambia is one of the best destination for safaris, whether you want a traditional one, or a walking safari through the Sanctuary Zebra Plains. Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is also located in Zambia.

    Antarctica

Antarctica is one of those travel destinations that not everybody will find attractive, but truth is that Antarctica is becoming more and more popular with eccentric travelers. What you need to get to the coldest and driest part of the world is a lot of motivation and lots of money too. There are several destinations that you can visit, most of them are stations and bases: Paradise Bay, Neko Harbour, Hannah Point, Half Moon Island, etc.

I heard, there are some difficulties to get in Bhutan. Is there a visa needed, or a tax?

What’s this on the pic for Syria. A crusader castle?

@Stefan: Yes, you need a visa to travel into Bhutan.
Btw. that’s Krak des Chevaliers on the picture, and old castle from the 11th century, and yes, you’re right, it’s a castle used in the Crusades.
