Budapest is rapidly becoming one of the best tourist destinations in Central Europe, and not only because of its rich cultural and historical heritage. When it comes to nightlife, Budapest is colorful, relaxed and creative. Like in Vienna, coffee culture is an integral part of Budapest’s life.

There are many old and traditional coffee houses where you can savor a slice of cake accompanied by a cup of strong coffee, but there are also many small independent coffee shops which offer an amazing variety of coffee specialties in a cozy atmosphere. So for when you visit this amazing city, here is a list of the best coffee shops where you can while away an afternoon.

Ruszwurm Cukrászda

Although technically a cake shop, Ruszwurm offers a very nice variety of hot beverages. This very stylish Biedermeier shop is run by one of Hungary’s “dynasties” of confectioners, who have been doing their job excellently for over 150 years. While the coffee is excellent at Ruszwurm, don’t leave without trying some cake too.

They have quite a few types of cakes and pastries, from the world famous Dobos cake to other equally delicious confections like almond cake or the Mátyás  cake (the shop owners swore that they will rename the cake after the new star player of Ferencvaros football team, should there ever be one).

Garzon Cafe

Garzon cafe is one of the newest additions to the Budapest coffee scene, and they are quickly rising in popularity. The atmosphere is one of the things you get to appreciate the most at Garzon. It is quiet, with mellow music playing in the background, and while the shop has a large clientele, somehow it never seems overly crowded. It is a great place to relax in the company of a nice cup of frothy cafe latte, or to have a late night chat with your friends over some wine.

Auguszt Cukrászda

This cake shop/coffee shop claims to be the oldest pastry shop in Budapest, and it might as well be true. This charming cafe in downtown Budapest has a historic feel, and the service is prompt and very polite. They have some wonderful pastries to go with your coffee or tea. Most of the edible things on their menu are traditional Hungarian pastries, so if you want some local specialties, there is no better place to taste them than at Auguszt. There are some interesting new recipes on the menu too, but the best cakes are the traditional ones.

Cafe Gerbaud

Cafe Gerbaud is located on one of the most beautiful and touristy streets in Budapest, Vaci Utca. Gerbaud is possibly the most famous cafe in Budapest, and not only because it’s in the heart of the city.

Their Dobos cake is delicious, and there are so many mouth watering cakes on the menu that you will have a hard time deciding what to get. Their coffee choices are great too, i a bit expensive compared to other Budapest cafes.

Cafe Gerloczy

Cafe Gerloczy is a small coffee shop near Déak square, offering great coffee and amazing crepes. The best time of the day to visit it is before noon, when you can take advantage of the excellent breakfast menu. You can get a croissant and a steamy hot chocolate, or have something more filling, like toast with eggplant salad, French toast with sour cream, or a slice of cake.

Because it’s that expensive, Gerbaud is basically only for foreign tourists.
